Product Journey

With Bread Financial currently lagging behind competitors from a mobile app standpoint, its breadth of financing and savings products will establish an advantage over other card marketers. Our team researched and stacked each feature against other best in class Fintech companies. For MVP we plan to design and ship sufficient features to satisfy early adopters with subsequent fast follow releases.

Visual Design

Our team usually begins the visual design process exploring a wide range of stylistic directions. I personally wanted to investigate a dark mode design system. Quickly rising as a favorite of the Bread Financial team, I then worked with my design team to create a light mode version and expanded its visual vocabulary from there.

Onboarding

Four personas were identified early on as target customers. With the age range skewing younger (18-45), I designed this app experience to allow for the typography, brand colors, and brand patterns to shine. Also introduced is north–south pagination akin to TikTok and Poshmark.

Dashboard

While Bread Financial is not in the cryptocurrency space, much of my inspiration originates from there. I felt information needed to be crystal clear, simple, and ultimately minimal. Younger customers don’t want to immerse themselves in copious amounts of copy. So I blazed ahead with a less is more attitude and introduced light animations to support ideas regarding interactions and patterns.

Bill Pay

Taking full advantage of this being a native app, I felt the buy now, pay later feature needed to be both visually intuitive and include an element of fun. Introduced was a branded moment in the shape of a large sprinkle and circle slider. Customers simply swipe north–south and pay the amount of their choosing. Both the slider track and background colors change effortlessly during this interaction.

The Bill Pay experience is silky smooth as customers add and select payment sources, receive notifcations, review payment information, and more.

Once a customer completes their payment, they’re rewarded with confetti and positive haptic feedback.

Rewards

Similar to Bill Pay, the Rewards flow and interactions needed to be frictionless. At a glance, customers were able to review their most recent rewards activity and diving deeper as needed. Also integrated was a simple slider allowing customers to redeem the reward amount of their choosing.

Account Settings

One of the more challenging layers of this mobile app was Account Settings. Not only did these screens afford less real estate, accessibility was constantly checked. Customers were immersed in cool cerulean blues while navigating this space.

Chatbot

Rounding out this mobile app experience includes a virtual assistant or chatbot. It was designed to appear open, informal, and friendly with a simple decision tree. Customers also have the option to submit their own questions.
